Website Planning Overview

Website Design Stage

Here at PC•WebDesign.co.uk, we follow a systematic approach to developing websites. what follows is the design life cycle which we try and follow, and we fit this around you.

Before creating a website it is so important to take some time to plan exactly what it is which is needed in the website. It is extremely important before deciding what content will be developed, that you thouroughly consider your audience or target market, as well as defining the purpose.

Website Design Stages

The way we do things

The Stages that all Websites must go through are:-

  • Purpose

A purpose statement has to focus on what the website will accomplish and what the end users / clients will get from it. Each website must have a specific set of goals; Setting short and long term goals for the website will help make the purpose clear and aid in the planning for the future as to what expansions, mods and improvements need to be developed and when they may possibly take place.

  • Audience

Defining the audience is a key step in the website planning process. The audience is the group of people who are expected to visit your website ie the market being targeted. These people will be viewing the website for a specific reason and it is important to know exactly what they are looking for when they visit the site. A clearly defined purpose or goal of the site as well as an understanding of what visitors want to do/feel when they come to your site will help to identify the target audience. Upon considering who is most likely to need/use the content, a list of characteristics common to the users needs {need}to be collated - such as :"

  • Audience Characteristics
  • Information Preferences
  • Computer Specifications
  • Web Experience

Taking into account the characteristics of the audience will allow an effective website to be created that will deliver the desired content to the target audience.

  • Content

Content evaluation is essential to a well planned website, ensuring that the website can be clearly defined. Each content (category) should be named with a concise and descriptive title that will become a link on the website. Planning for the site's content ensures that the wants / needs of the target audience and the purpose of the site will be fulfilled.

  • Compatability

We understand that many website incompatibilities go unnoticed by most web designers and unreported by the users. The only way to be certain a website will work on a particular platform is to test it on that platform, and that is exactly what we do in all major development stages.

  • Project Management / Planning documentation

Project Management. This requires Planning Documentation

Planning Documentation is used to visually plan the site while taking into account the purpose, audience and content of the design, site structure and interactions that are most suitable for the website Documentation must be written for the website. This is then a model which allows the website layout to be reviewed and can result in managed website changes, improvements and enhancements to the website (These review processes increases the likelihood of success of the website) A 'site map' is then drawn up, which then allows a 'branched website diagram' which shows many interconnections between web pages such as hyperlinks within sentences.

Code implementation

Solid and stable

Here at PC•WebDesign we use clean and stable code giving a firm foundation for current and future browsers. We follow the industry standards set out by the W3C (XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1)

Website Layout + General Design and Feel

We use either a semantic based design through the use of Cascading Style Sheets(CSS) to set-out fixed layouts, to ensure we have design over the areas we have no control over (customers web browser used, size and characteristics of available fonts, size of the browser window, etc.). Additionaly, the pragmatic choice may be made to flow the design between a pre-defined dimension, this allows us to avoid coding for the browser choices making up the 'long tail' This decision is made on a content by page basis depending on the page content purpose.

There is however a third option, Adobe Flash (formely macromedia) using a proprietary, robust graphics option 'Fit to window' feature. This is a fixed layout that optimatly scales the content of the page without losing any object arangement or text wrapping when used through different broweser configurations.
As Flash player is only installed on upto 85% of PC's we tend to use flash only sparesly. Mainly for bells and whistle effects

Tableless web design

Tables should only ever be used for tabular data; not for layout!

Looks To How It Works

After the browser wars subsided, and the dominant browsers such as Internet Explorer became more W3C compliant, designers started turning toward CSS as an alternate means of laying out their pages. The W3 Consortium has made CSS in combination with XHTML the standard for web design, which we primarily design within. Some websites are more likely to be written towards how the page 'looks' as apposed to how the Page Works. It is as important to look at how the Page works within the whole internet enviroment; items such as the 'google robots' searchable text may not look as professional as a Flash movie, but this keyword laden text version will return a score on the search rankings. Ideally we need to make sufficient room for both. whilst keeping within the design layout structure. How well a site works depends on the designer's visual communication ideas as well as the keyword rich text entries. Another problem when using lots of graphics on a page is that download times can be greatly lengthened, more often than not irritating the end user.
